丹福斯逼普罗克特认罪、供出同伙，普罗克特回一句 I am not empowered to trade your life for a lie（我可没权力拿你的命去换一句谎话）。他说那些人 They think to go like saints（想装得像圣人一样赴死），可 I like not to spoil their names（我不想坏了他们的名声）。他又说 you will prove its whiteness or you cannot live（你得证明灵魂干净，否则活不下去），要他交代同谋；普罗克特只认自己：I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another（我只说自己的罪，我无权评判别人），I have no tongue for it（我说不出口）。庭上催他 You will sign your name or it is no confession（你得签上名字，否则就不算认罪）。想学守住底线、不肯连累别人的英文，这段最硬。

他们以为自己能像圣人一样死去。
一句轻蔑就把别人的殉道说成自欺，反讽全在 like saints 上。

讥讽别人自我美化时用；当面说等于拆台，关系一般别这么讲。
They think they'll die as heroes. ／ They picture themselves as martyrs.
中性
think to 相连，like saints 带讽意。
They think to go like saints just because they filed a complaint. 就因为递了封投诉信，他们就以为自己是圣人。

把拒绝供人说得像一种口味，轻描淡写里全是分寸。

婉拒做损人名声的事时用；语气偏旧，现代口语可说 I'd rather not。

like not 连读，spoil their names 放重。

用『没有舌头』代替『我不说』，把拒绝说得干净又没有火气。

不想开口谈某事、想体面收住时用；对追根问底的人说能留余地。
