cast doubt upon，指使某件事显得可疑。剧里说 reprieve or pardon must cast doubt upon the guilt，就是「缓期或赦免会让先前被处死的人是否有罪显得可疑」。
「不肯让步、纹丝不动」。剧里说 They will not budge，就是「他们死活不肯松口」，指受刑的人坚决不认罪。
「坚决不松口的」，形容态度极硬。剧里问 Is he yet adamant?，就是「他还是那么顽固吗」，问的是普罗克特肯不肯认罪。
belie themselves。belie 是「与…不符、让人看不出真相」，剧里说 counsel Christians they should belie themselves，就是「劝基督徒说谎骗自己」。
