行刑前，神父安慰死囚，可对方哭着问 Why do I have to die?（我为什么要死）；他反问那些害他的人 Why not put them to death?（为什么不把他们处死）。神父只能说别质疑 the will of God（上帝的旨意），又劝他 Brace yourself（挺住）。想学「挺住」「控制不住」这些在巨大压力下用的说法，这段最揪心。

行刑前，杜普雷神父来给死囚做最后的祈祷。一个士兵哭着问：我为什么要死？我什么都没干；他反问，为什么那些该负责的人不死、不被 put them to death（处死）。神父回答不能质疑 the will of God（上帝的旨意），还说他在敌人面前表现过勇气，现在也该在自己人面前 show it（拿出来）。士兵却说自己 I'm scared（我害怕），I can't help it（我控制不住）；神父反复念 brace yourself（挺住），又引经文安慰他，说今日你就要同我在乐园里了。最后军令响起：About face（向后转）、Forward march（齐步走），他们被押往刑柱。想学「挺住」「控制不住」「上帝的旨意」这些说法，这段最重。

最朴素的反问，把将死之人的不甘全砸向不公。

Why don't they 连读，两个问句一句比一句重。

下一章 · 17make me the goat替罪羊这场戏：枪决后将军互相开刀指「站稳、挺住、做好心理准备」，多用来让人面对冲击。戏里神父反复对死囚说 Brace yourself，就是让他撑住。
说 I can't help it，表示身不由己、没办法。戏里死囚哭着说 I can't help it, Father，就是「我控制不住啊，神父」。
指「上帝的旨意」。戏里神父说 We do not question the will of God，就是劝人不要质疑命运的安排。
指「把某人处死、处决」，比 kill 更正式。戏里死囚反问 Why not put them to death，就是「为什么不把他们处死」。
指「向后转」，是队列里的军事口令。戏里押送死囚时就喊 About face、Forward march 这些口令。
