将军来前线视察，跟达克斯上校先寒暄，再一起去看阵地。将军看不惯「纸上谈兵的军官」，说他最看不起 armchair officers（纸上谈兵的军官），还讲自己的信条：真想当兵，就得待在有仗打的地方。达克斯接话说您从没 live up to（辜负）过这套信条。想学「纸上谈兵」这个词，很地道。

说 pregnable，指阵地能被攻破，是军事里的书面词。戏里将军看着「蚁丘」说目标 certainly pregnable。
指「为……作证、打包票」。戏里有人说 I can vouch for that，就是「这我可以作证」。
指「达到、不辜负某种期望或信条」。戏里说 the colonel never failed to live up to it，就是「他从没让那套信条落空」。
relief 除了「救济」，在军事里指换防或接防部队。戏里问 how did your relief come off，就是「昨晚换防进行得怎么样」。
