行刑在即，达克斯把罗歇叫来，偏偏点他当行刑队指挥官，还逐条交代怎么绑人、蒙眼、开枪，一句 there's nothing to it（这没什么难的）。罗歇慌了，请求 be excused from（免除）这项差事，达克斯只回 Request denied（请求驳回）。想学「没什么难的」和冷冰冰的拒绝，这段寒意十足。

行刑前几小时，达克斯把罗歇中尉叫来，开门见山说手上有件不痛快的事。他偏偏挑罗歇当行刑队的指挥官——毕竟罗歇当初就是挑了帕里送死，达克斯还点破 You picked him because he was a coward（你挑他，是因为他是个懦夫）。他说明 I have to pick someone to be in charge of the firing squad（我得挑个人负责行刑队），罗歇说从没干过，他一句 there's nothing to it（这没什么难的），随后逐条交代：绑柱子、蒙眼、喊 Ready, aim, fire，掏出左轮给每人 put a bullet through（打一枪）。罗歇请求 be excused from（免除）这项差事，达克斯只回 Request denied（请求驳回），把他打发走。炮兵上尉卢梭求见，说有一件对军事审判 a bearing on（有重大影响）的事要报告。

把结论塞进问句里，用反意疑问句逼对方替自己盖章。
