陪审室里，一个人提出：如果少年真杀了父亲，为什么三小时后还要回家取刀？有人当笑话听，有人却认真起来。一句 off the top of my head（随口一想）是没打草稿就发言的挡箭牌，stand a chance（毫无胜算）则点破了那个法庭指派律师的处境。想学会站着把话说到点上，这几句很顶用。

loyal to 连读，one side or the other 放平收住。

我认为疑点已经够多，足以让我们怀疑他当时到底在不在场……
把「合理怀疑」说得平实又准确，不带情绪却最有说服力。

表达保留意见、主张再查时用；正式讨论里非常自然。

中性
enough doubt 稍顿，whether he was there 轻轻连读。

把刀捅在别人胸口上到处走，可不太体面。
用最正经的口气说最荒唐的托词，冷笑话里把逻辑漏洞戳穿。

反话式吐槽时用；对不熟的人这么说会被当成真在讲礼数。
Leaving knives around is hardly polite. ／ That is not exactly good manners.
口语

“That's not a very promising situation for a young lawyer.”
对一个年轻律师来说，这可不是什么好差事。
用轻描淡写点破辩护律师没动力，怀疑从利益动机悄悄生根。

委婉评价不利处境时能用；对当事人别太直，这种留白更合适。

not a very 连读，promising 重音在第一音节。
That's not a very promising situation for a new team. 对新团队来说，这局面可不乐观。
It could mean he didn't want the case, or he resented being appointed. It's the kind of case that brings him nothing... no money, no glory, not even much chance of winning. That's not a very promising situation for a young lawyer. He'd really have to believe in his client to put up any kind of a good case... and, as you pointed out a minute ago, obviously he didn't.
可能说明他不想接这个案子，或者对被指派心怀不满。 这种案子什么也给他带不来…… 没钱，没名声，连赢的机会都不大。 对一个年轻律师来说，这可不是什么好前程。 他得真心相信自己的当事人，才可能把这场官司好好打一打…… 而正如你刚才指出的，他显然并不相信。
Maybe the boy did kill his father, didn't hear the scream... did run out in a panic, did calm down three hours later... and come back to get the knife, risking being caught by the police. Maybe all of those things happened, but maybe they didn't.

下一章 · 11out of thin air无中生有这场戏：重演十五秒到门口字面是「活着的尽头」，其实是一句夸张的口语，表示「活见鬼、离谱到家」。戏里有人听到少年的辩解就冒出一句 Well, if this isn't the living end，意思是这事荒唐得没边了。
可以说 didn't stand a chance。stand a chance 是「有机会」，加上否定就是毫无机会；戏里说那孩子自己的律师都知道他没戏，用的正是这句。
就是「随口一想、没细想」，用来在没准备的情况下先讲个大概。戏里有人要发言前先说这句，等于给自己留个余地，说错了也不打紧。
see to it 后面常接 that 从句，意思是「确保做到、务必办妥」，语气比 make sure 更正式。戏里有人推断，凶手得冷静到能 see to it that 刀上不留指纹。
说 court-appointed，比如 He was court-appointed 就是「他是法庭指派的」。这在美国司法里很常见：没钱请律师的被告，会由法庭指派一位给他。
