「The Doctor Interviews Catherine」を読み解く

What's really going on

The interview is a duel, and Catherine wins it by refusing to be a victim on cue. She performs madness — 'I'm classified as violent. I'm apt to attack you and then accuse you of rape' — but her performance is a test of the doctor, not a symptom. She admits the gardener was innocent, yet she also knows that admitting it is exactly what a madwoman would seem to do: 'It's the sort of thing an insane woman would do.' That is the trap she sets: agree with her and you prove her insane, disagree and you prove her dangerous. Her closing line, 'I really do think I am sane... despite considerable evidence to the contrary,' is both a plea and a challenge. The scene shows a woman who has learned that sanity, in her position, is a claim no one will accept.

Theme

IdentityCatherine's sanity is the question, and she refuses to let anyone else define her by their diagnosis.
DeceptionShe performs madness as a test, trapping anyone who tries to judge whether she is really insane.

このチャプターで学べること

  • Catherine's self-accusation is a test, not a confession.
  • The doctor stays calm by asking short questions.
  • Burning her own hand puts the nun in the wrong.
  • Her claim of sanity is both a joke and a plea.

発音のポイント

  • sick of being — Link sick of into si-kof, with of reduced.
  • haven't you — Haven't you often blurs into haven-cha.
  • been invited to — Been reduces and to is lightly swallowed after invited.
I'm so sick of being bossed and bullied.

Catherine's outburst after the cigarette burn: she is tired of being pushed around and physically hurt by the staff.

You have every reason to be.

Her answer to the doctor when he seems nervous: she agrees he should be afraid, setting up a mock threat.

I really do think I am sane...

Her quiet, sincere claim to sanity, immediately qualified by the fact that everyone thinks otherwise.

It's the sort of thing an insane woman would do.

She agrees she unjustly accused the gardener, then points out that such behaviour is exactly what madness looks like — trapping the listener either way.

このシーンについての質問

Why is Catherine kept in isolation?

She is 'classified as violent' after the incident with the gardener. The hospital treats her as dangerous and keeps her where no one can see or hear her.

Did Catherine really accuse the gardener falsely?

She says she did. She claims she made advances to him, he refused, and she denounced him as a lecher — a lie she admits was unjust.

What does "bossed and bullied" mean?

It means being ordered around and treated badly. Catherine uses it to say she is tired of the way the staff control and mistreat her.

Who does Catherine blame for her situation?

Her Aunt Violet. She says Violet put her in a place where no one can see or hear her, and suggests Violet hates her.

Why does the doctor let Catherine smoke?

He is trying to get her to talk and to see the real woman behind the diagnosis. In the scene he gives her a cigarette and stays calm through her provocations.
