What's really going on
The scene does two things at once: it makes Puss ridiculous and then makes him afraid. The cats' taunts are cruel and specific — his new name, his missing sword, his friendship with a dog — and they end with the worst label of all, scaredy-cat. What they do not know is that fear has already found him. The Wolf's reveal is the film's sharpest turn: "I'm Death, straight up," he says, refusing any metaphor, and then offers to "do us both a favor" by ending Puss's last life. The politeness is the threat. Puss has spent the whole film sure of his legend, and here he meets the one adversary who is not impressed by it.
