What's really going on
The scene is a study in trust, or the lack of it. The dog is almost aggressively open: he has no name, only a history of what people yelled at him, and he offers all of it without being asked. Kitty answers with her own name and then with suspicion - "No one's that dumb. No one's that nice." Her distrust is a defence, and the dog's openness is what makes it funny and a little sad, because he keeps smiling anyway. The comedy continues as they enter the Dark Forest: the map is enchanted, the dangers are absurdly named, and a display of cuteness nearly derails the trip. Under the jokes, the film is assembling its real subject: three characters who need to learn how to trust each other before the wish can matter.
