Salieri Begins His Confession, Explained:trained monkey

Salieri is not ready to confess. First he tests the priest, asking, "Can you recall no melody of mine?" When the priest does not, Salieri plays a tune - and the priest recognizes it. "That was Mozart," he says, and the visit turns from small talk into a long, jealous confession.

あらすじ

In an asylum, Father Vogler visits the elderly Salieri and urges him to confess. Salieri instead tests whether the priest remembers any of his music, laments that he was once the most famous composer in Europe, and plays a melody the priest knows at once. "That was Mozart," Salieri says, and begins confessing his jealousy of the man he is accused of killing.

「Salieri Begins His Confession」を読み解く

What's really going on

Salieri's test is the whole scene in miniature: before he can confess, he needs the priest to prove he was once worth remembering. "Can you recall no melody of mine?" he asks, and the priest's failure to answer is exactly what he expects. What wounds him is not that Mozart was gifted but that Mozart's father made him so, while his own father gave him nothing. He admits the envy plainly - "I admit, I was jealous" - yet the confession still keeps its distance, as if he is arranging the story rather than releasing it. The priest offers the way out, "Give yourself some peace," and Salieri answers with the man who has occupied his mind for a lifetime: "I can't think of a time when I didn't know his name."

Theme

GuiltSalieri frames his whole life as a confession, measuring his envy of Mozart against the peace the priest offers.
IdentityHe needs the priest to remember his music before he can speak, because being forgotten terrifies him more than guilt.

このチャプターで学べること

  • Recall is a slightly formal way to say remember.
  • Accuse of always takes the preposition of.
  • The admission of jealousy is what makes him human.
  • The father's mockery shaped his whole life.

発音のポイント

  • accuse yourself — Accuse yourself blends across the words.
  • didn't know — The t in didn't is often dropped.
Can you recall no melody of mine?

Salieri asks the priest to remember any tune by the composer he used to be, and the silence that follows measures how completely he has been forgotten.

I'm sorry,I didn't know you wrote that.

The priest apologizes for not recognizing the melody, not realizing he has just confirmed Salieri's worst fear about his reputation.

The man you accuse yourself of killing.

The priest states Salieri's sin back to him in plain terms, naming Mozart as the man Salieri holds himself responsible for.

I can't think of a time when I didn't know his name.

Even as a boy, Salieri says, Mozart's name was already there - the rival existed in his mind before the man ever did.

I admit,I was jealous...

The confession begins with the one word Salieri has avoided all his life, breaking a lifetime of pride and resentment.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Salieri test the priest with his own music?

He wants proof that he still matters. If a man of God cannot hum a single melody of his, then his fame has truly vanished, and the confession that follows comes from someone already forgotten.

What does the priest want from Salieri?

Father Vogler wants a confession. He urges Salieri to unburden himself now, saying if he has something to confess he should do it, and offers him peace rather than judgment.

What does 'trained monkey' mean here?

It is the insult Salieri's father used to mock his wish to be like Mozart: a performer who does tricks for an audience instead of a real artist. It is meant to crush the ambition.

Why does Salieri say he was jealous of Mozart's father?

Because Leopold Mozart taught his son everything, while Salieri's own father dismissed his talent. The envy he admits is not of the prodigy but of the father who made him possible.

Why does Salieri say Mozart was his idol?

He insists he worshipped Mozart before he resented him. He says he cannot remember a time when he did not know Mozart's name, so the admiration and the envy began together.
