V Shows Evey Monte Cristo, Explained

V for Vendetta · 2006

Chapter 9 of 25 · 2'24"

On the surface it's movie night: V shares his favorite film, and Evey asks if it has a happy ending. Underneath, the Count of Monte Cristo is a mirror. "It is not my sword, Mondego, but your past that disarmed you." Evey's verdict on the hero is really a warning about V himself.

V Shows Evey Monte Cristo, explained

What happens

V invites Evey to watch The Count of Monte Cristo, his favorite film, and she asks whether it has a happy ending. They talk about the story, and Evey says she feels sorry for Mercedes because Edmond Dantes cared more about revenge than about her. Meanwhile Finch's team traces Prothero's death, and a news report announces that the Voice of London is dead.

What's really going on

The Monte Cristo screening is V's way of explaining himself without saying it outright. The line he loves, "It is not my sword, Mondego, but your past that disarmed you," is the whole plot of V for Vendetta in miniature: a man undone by what was done to him. Evey misses the point at first, only seeing that the hero neglected Mercedes, but her complaint lands on V, who has invited her into his world while keeping her at arm's length. Her line, "he cared more about revenge than he did about her," is both film criticism and the film's central question. Right after it, the broadcast reports Prothero's death, and V reads the anchor's lie off her blinking: revenge has already become method. The scene quietly sets up the choice Evey will later have to make.

Key lines & what they mean

“It is not my sword, Mondego, but your past that disarmed you.”
A line from the Monte Cristo film V is watching: the hero tells his enemy that guilt and memory, not steel, have already beaten him.
“No prints, no hair, no fibers. The guy is like a ghost.”
Finch's team found no forensic evidence at the scene, so the attacker seems to leave nothing behind at all.
“When you're at this as long as I've been, you stop believing in coincidence.”
The veteran detective says that with experience, two suspicious deaths in one week stop looking like chance.
“Because he cared more about revenge than he did about her.”
Evey's answer about the Monte Cristo hero: she pities Mercedes because the man chose vengeance over the woman he loved.
“She blinks a lot when she does a story she knows is false.”
V's proof that the news anchor is lying: he has watched her on air and knows her tell.
“Lewis, you will be sorely missed.”
The closing line of the broadcast's tribute to Prothero, delivered as if the state truly mourns him.

Theme

  • Revenge — Monte Cristo and V both let revenge outlast everything. Evey names it: he cared more about revenge than about her.
  • Deception — The state announces Prothero died of heart failure, and V exposes the lie by watching the anchor blink on air.

Questions, then the lines
Why does V show Evey The Count of Monte Cristo?

It is his favorite film, but it is also his argument. The Monte Cristo story is a man destroyed and then rebuilt around revenge, and V wants Evey to see both the romance and the cost, even before he tells her his own plans.

Why does Evey feel sorry for Mercedes?

In the film, Edmond Dantes devotes himself to revenge and neglects Mercedes, the woman he loves. Evey notices that the hero's obsession costs him the person he is avenging himself for, and she says so out loud.

How does V know the news anchor is lying about Prothero?

He has studied her broadcasts. He points out that she blinks a lot when she reads a story she knows is false, so when she reports Prothero's death he treats it as a lie rather than news.

What does the news report claim about Prothero's death?

It says the Voice of London passed away late at night from apparent heart failure, and that his body was found at his office, where he often worked long hours alone.
