The story so far
Everything you need before watchingIn a Los Alamos classroom, Oppenheimer uses a harbor munitions blast as a word problem: if that fire were nuclear, the yield jumps to kilotons. Teller is not listening. Asked if the lecture bores him, he says everyone already knew a fission bomb was possible. He wants something new: compress hydrogen, induce fusion, get megatons. Oppenheimer asks where the force comes from. A small fission bomb, Teller says, and the class becomes a hydrogen-bomb pitch.

kilotons

fusion reaction
Golden lines
A great line in its own right — why and how to use it“knowing a fission bomb was possible.”
knowing X was possible
We already knew that would work. / That part was never in doubt.
neutral
“How 'bout we leave it with something new?”
How about we leave with something new?
Why don't we end with something new? / Let's not leave without a new idea.
informal
How 'bout 连成一拍,new 上扬收问。
“but megatons.”
not X, but Y
Not thousands. Millions. / Forget kilotons. Think bigger.
neutral
Monologue
One character carrying the scene — shadow the whole passageInstead of uranium or plutonium, we use hydrogen. -Heavy hydrogen. -Hydrogen. Deuterium. You see? We compact the atoms together under great pressure to induce a fusion reaction. Then we'll get not kilotons, but megatons.
