Scarlet Assigns the Crown Heist, Explained: get down to business

Scarlet shows the Minions her lair, introduces her husband Herb, and hands out inventions before naming the real job: stealing the Queen's crown. "Steal me the crown and all your dreams come true," she promises, then turns the bedtime story of the three little pigs into a threat about what happens to those who fail her.

What happens

Scarlet welcomes the Minions into her secret lair, introduces her husband Herb and outfits each of them with an invention: a stretch suit, a lava lamp gun and a hypno-hat. Then she gets down to business and tells them what she really wants — the Queen of England's crown — and ends with a bedtime story that is really a warning.

Scarlet Assigns the Crown Heist, explained

What's really going on

The scene is where the film's villain finally explains her motive, and it is deliberately childish. Scarlet does not want power or money in the abstract; she wants a crown because it would make her a princess, and the narration says as much: "But that crown would mean she was a princess, and everybody loves a princess!" Her whole speech is built like a fairy tale because her ambition is a fairy tale, and the bedtime story turns it into a threat, since the pigs who fail are blown off the earth. The comedy comes from the mismatch between how cute she sounds and what she is actually promising to do, and the Minions, who understand none of it, simply cheer.

Theme

Dark humorA villain delivers a fairy-tale bedtime story that is really a death threat, and the cute tone is the joke.
AmbitionScarlet's whole plan comes down to a childlike wish for a crown, yet she will threaten anyone to get it.

Steal me the crown and all your dreams come true.

Scarlet offering the Minions everything they want in exchange for the crown, framing a crime as a reward.

But that crown would mean she was a princess, and everybody loves a princess!

The bedtime story's real point: Scarlet's ambition is to be loved and admired as a princess, not merely to rule.

I know you won't disappoint me.

A friendly-sounding line that is also a threat, spoken after a story about what happens to those who fail her.

I'm her biggest fan, love her work!

Her exaggerated praise for the Queen, which shows the obsession behind her plan to steal the crown.

Questions about this scene

Why does Scarlet want the crown so badly?

Because the crown would make her a princess, and the narration says everybody loves a princess. Under her ambition is a childish wish to be admired and adored, not just obeyed.

Why does Scarlet tell the three little pigs story?

It's a threat, not a bedtime story. The pigs stand for the Minions, the wolf is Scarlet, and the ending shows exactly what happens to anyone who fails to bring back the crown.

What does "get down to business" mean?

It means to stop chatting and start on the real matter. Scarlet says it after introducing Herb and handing out the inventions, when she finally gets around to explaining the mission.

What inventions do the Minions get?

Bob gets a stretch suit, Kevin is given a lava lamp gun that shoots real lava, and Stuart receives a hypno-hat that can hypnotize anyone. Each gift is part of the deal for stealing the crown.

Who is Herb?

Herb is Scarlet's husband. She introduces him as an inventor, a super genius and a fox, and he is the one who suits the Minions up with their new gadgets.
