酒吧里，一个年轻人不信美国有自己的神话，一位老者却说：美国真有个能 grant a wish（帮人实现愿望）的家伙，叫 O.W. 格兰特，每人只给一个。他神出鬼没，平时爱捉弄人，可一旦 take a shine to someone（喜欢上某人），就会来真的。想聊都市传说、或形容「看谁顺眼」，这些说法很有画面。

酒吧里，一个年轻人跟扎克争论美国有没有自己的神话，一位老者插话说：美国真有个能 grant a wish（帮人实现愿望）的家伙，叫 O.W. 格兰特，每位顾客只满足一个愿望。他不是人去找他，而是他来找人；他多半爱 mess with someone（戏弄、招惹别人），可要是他 take a shine to someone（喜欢上某人），就会 play it straight（来真的）。老者还说，有种说法是他父亲是个跟爱尔兰人漂洋过海来的矮妖精，所以 O.W. 格兰特是不死之身；他抽一支雕成猴子模样的烟斗，也就是 in the image of（照着……的样子）一只猴子。想聊都市传说、形容看谁顺眼，或描述照着某物做的东西，这些说法都能用。

两句对称，find him 和 finds them 重音各落一次。

用一个定语从句把传说钉在地理上，语气像随口爆料。

介绍某地有个奇特人物时能用；严肃场合说这个像在开玩笑。

who grants wishes 轻快带过，wishes 尾音别拖。

“if he takes a shine to you, he'll play it straight.”

一句里两个短语，把偏心和规矩一起说明白。

说某人特别待见你时能用；对着长辈或客户别这么说。

takes a 连读，shine to you 一串滑过去，straight 加重。

不是。这里是「老老实实、来真的」，跟玩花招相对。戏里说他平时爱捉弄人，但遇到看上的人就 play it straight。
意思一样，都问「为什么」，但 how come 更口语、更随意，后面常接正常语序。戏里有人问 how come we've never heard of this O.W. Grant。
表示「照着……的样子、以……为原型」，常形容雕像、画像。戏里说他那支烟斗雕成猴子的模样，就用了 carved in the image of a monkey。
