希尔迪一个人在记者室，越狱的厄尔·威廉斯突然端着枪进来，要她别透露自己的行踪。她没跑，反倒稳住他，转头在电话里喊 On the level（说真的），催沃尔特·伯恩斯快来，还告诉对方厄尔就在她手上。想看懂怎么把举枪的人先劝住，就盯着这两句听。

越狱的厄尔·威廉斯溜进记者室，撞见独自留下的希尔迪，用枪逼她别说出自己在哪。希尔迪没有硬拼：厄尔说 You can't trust anybody in this crazy world（这疯狂的世界里谁都信不得），她顺着他的话说自己也不信任何人，又告诉他自己正在写他的报道 production for use（为使用而生产）。趁他犹豫，她打电话给沃尔特·伯恩斯，一句 On the level（说真的）请他快来，还说厄尔就在她手上。莫莉·马洛伊随后赶到，劝不住地要去找他们，两人只好先想办法藏起厄尔。

下一章 · 14sitting pretty处境安稳这场戏：把逃犯藏进书桌里意思是「躲起来、别露面」。说的是一旦有人越狱或出事，先藏好别让人找到。这里有人被嘱咐 lay low and keep your mouth shut，就是先躲起来，别乱说话。
try any tricks。厄尔拿枪指着希尔迪时说 If you try any tricks, I'll shoot you，就是「你要是敢耍花样，我就开枪」。trick 在这里是使诈、动手脚的意思。
level 有「水平、摆平」的意思，on the level 原本指用水平仪验过、没做手脚，后来就成了「说真的、不骗你」。希尔迪在电话里急着找人帮忙，就用了这句。
直译「为使用而生产」，是厄尔案子里被反复提到的说法，指东西造出来是给人用的。希尔迪说自己正写他这篇报道，用它拉近和厄尔的距离。
get someone out。莫莉说要 I want to get him out，意思是想把厄尔弄出去、带他脱身。out 强调从里面出来，用在救人、越狱、帮忙脱身都行。
可以说 on the level，也可以说 for real、no kidding。日常更随口用 for real，on the level 偏老派、偏电影对白，但意思一样，都是强调自己没撒谎。
