新来的囚犯互相打听 So, what's the toke?（你是犯了什么事进来的？），有人只答 An accident（一场意外），有人却吹自己拿燃烧瓶炸了保龄球馆；讲到 Only thing was（唯一的问题是），才发现杀错了人。想学英语里怎么搭话、怎么讲自己的倒霉事，这几句很地道。

收监点名时，新来的囚犯先互相打听底细：有人问 So, what's the toke?（你是犯了什么事进来的？），一个人只说 An accident（一场意外），另一个却眉飞色舞地讲自己 firebombed the bowling alley（拿燃烧瓶炸了保龄球馆），把人家男友 beat the shit out of（狠狠揍了一顿），第二晚又去 totaled the place（把那地方砸了个稀烂），最后又补上 Only thing was（唯一的问题是），他杀错了人。随后牢头喊 Get in line（站队），点数清楚，还威胁把人 put you on shithouse patrol（派去扫厕所）。想学英语里怎么吹牛、怎么听懂牢里的黑话，这段很带劲。
A1–C2 是欧标等级。点一个等级后，比它高的卡片会变淡，播放到那里不会自动暂停。

我纵火炸了那家保龄球馆，烧死了三个人。
两个动词一逗到底，把两桩重罪说得像顺手做的小事。
I did X, did Y.
交代往事、自嘲时用；语速放平反而更重，别在轻松场合乱说。
I broke in, took the cash. ／ I quit school, left town.
口语
firebombed 重音在前，killed 与前半句连成一串。
I sold the car, moved away. 我卖了车，搬走了。
“I was goofing around with some girls. Their boyfriends didn't like it too much, beat the shit out of me.”
我当时在跟几个女孩瞎闹。她们的男朋友不太高兴，把我揍得半死。
轻描淡写地说挨揍，粗话加玩笑口气把惨事讲成了段子。
I was doing X. They didn't like it, did Y.
讲自己吃过亏又不想显得可怜时用；口语场合，书面别用。
I was joking with them. They took it badly. ／ I was hanging out there. They didn't approve.
口语
didn't like it too much 连读快，beat the shit out of 一气呵成。
I was joking around at work. My boss didn't enjoy it, gave me a warning. 我在公司开玩笑，老板不喜欢，警告了我一次。
“Came back the next night, totaled the place.”
第二天晚上我又回来了，把那地方整个毁了。
省略主语，两个动作干脆利落，像老手在报自己的战绩。
Came back ..., did ...
讲连续动作、要冷硬语气时用；口语叙事常见，正式写作别省主语。
Went back later, cleaned it out. ／ Returned the next day, wrecked everything.
口语
Came back 后稍顿，totaled 重读。
Went back at dawn, finished the job. 天亮时我又回去，把活干完了。
“Only thing was, I wasted the wrong three people.”
唯一的问题是，我杀错了那三个人。
用「唯一的问题是」带出三条人命，反讽冷到骨子里。
Only thing was, ...
先铺垫再抖出大问题时用；反讽很重，别拿别人的不幸开玩笑。
Only trouble was, I got the wrong man. ／ The only problem was, it wasn't him.
口语
Only thing was 后停顿，wrong three people 逐词压实。
Only thing was, I sent the invite to everyone. 唯一的问题是，我把邀请发给了所有人。
“They keep the rest of the animals in line and give out the work assignments.”
他们看管剩下这帮人，还负责派活。
把囚犯说成 animals，一个词就把这里的人际等级讲透。
keep the rest of ... in line
形容有人管着一群难搞的人时用；这词带贬义，当着对方别说。
They keep the rest of the crew in line. ／ They manage the others and hand out tasks.
中性
the rest of 连读，in line 略拖，assignments 重音在后。
She keeps the rest of the interns in line and hands out tasks. 她管着其余实习生，还负责派活。
“They're gonna put you on shithouse patrol.”
他们会派你去扫厕所。
gonna 加脏词，预告的是新人最低的待遇，语气满不在乎。
They're gonna put you on ...
半开玩笑地警告谁会摊上苦差时用；粗俗，陌生场合别用。
They're gonna stick you on cleanup. ／ They'll put you on the worst shift.
口语
gonna put you 连读，shithouse 重读。
They're gonna put you on weekend duty. 他们会把周末的班排给你。

下一章 · 03a real class act模范人物这场戏：念罪状拆穿他的意外说这是监狱里的黑话，toke 在这里指「刑期、罪名」，整句就是「你是犯了什么事进来的？」。熟人之间也常拿来说笑，意思接近 What are you in for?
意思是「唯一的问题是」，用来在讲完一件事后补上关键的转折。台词 Only thing was, I wasted the wrong three people 就是「只不过，我杀错了那三个人」。
说 goof around，也可以说 goof off。指的是无所事事地闹着玩，不是认真做事。台词 I was goofing around with some girls 就是「我跟几个姑娘瞎闹」。
说 the rest of，后面接名词，比如 the rest of the animals（剩下的那帮人）。台词里牢头就是管着 the rest of 这些人。
监狱黑话，指「扫厕所的苦差」。shithouse 是厕所的粗俗说法，patrol 本是巡逻；把最脏最没面子的活儿说成「巡逻」，带点黑色幽默。
