莫雷诺转来时，狱警先把规矩摆出来：This facility runs on a point system（这里实行积分制），Points are time（积分就是时间），表现好能挣分，screwing up（犯错）就扣分，还警告他别在宿舍惹事，好好 make good time（表现，争取减刑）。可话音刚落，奥布莱恩就在宿舍跟他碰上，先假惺惺地说 I'm sorry about your little brother（你弟弟的事我很遗憾），转头承认人是他杀的，还甩下狠话 he's dead because you weren't looking out for him（他死了是因为你没看好他）。想学立规矩、放狠话的英语，这段火药味十足。

这里实行的是积分制。 积分就是时间。 表现好能挣分，犯了错就扣分。 表现好并不难。 保持积极的态度就行。 而犯错就是打架、想翻墙逃跑、还摆出一副烂态度，比如你现在这样。
下一章 · 07mess up弄坏这场戏：派工现场下注赌打架指监狱里的「积分管理制度」。台词 This facility runs on a point system 就是「这里实行积分制」，表现好加分、犯错扣分，积分直接换刑期。
口语里指「搞砸、弄糟、犯错」。台词 points for screwing up 就是「犯错扣分」。后面常接事情，如 screw up the plan（把计划搞砸）。
字面像「走得快」，但在牢里是「好好表现、争取减刑」。狱警说 I expect you to make good time，就是「我要你表现好点、多挣分」。
意思是「你凭什么以为」，用来质问对方的判断。台词 What makes you think I'm gonna give you any trouble 就是「你凭什么觉得我会给你惹麻烦」。
说 time stands still。台词 Time stands still 就是「时间在这里是停滞的」，常用来形容难熬、无聊或凝固的一刻。
