桌上摊着一个火柴盒，两位记者把上面的首字母 L、P、M 一路推下去：L 是利迪，P 是波特，最后认定 M 是马格鲁德。他们打算 fake her out（用假话唬住某人），回去骗那位记账的女人亲口说出名字；还有一句 I don't want a cookie（我才不稀罕讨赏）。想套话、想诈人，这两句都能用上。

两位记者摊开火柴盒，把上面的首字母逐个破译：L 是利迪，P 是波特，M 则排除麦科德、马迪安，最终认定是马格鲁德——他是米切尔手下的 second in command（二把手、副职）。可大陪审团的起诉止于五个闯入者和亨特、利迪，报道随时会断。于是他们想出一个办法：回去 fake her out（用假话唬住某人），由一个人故意说错、另一个人接话，逼那位记账的女人亲口确认。她嘴上说一句「两万五你弄哪儿去了」的玩笑，其实什么都答得上来；伍德沃德只能追着问。想说谁是二把手，用 second in command；想说用假话诈住对方，用 fake someone out；想说某人什么都答得上来，用 have answers for everything。
A1–C2 是欧标等级。点一个等级后，比它高的卡片会变淡，播放到那里不会自动暂停。

一句大白话加方言缩略，把局面的死结说得又狠又干脆。

对熟人转述判断时能用；正式场合别说，ain't 会被当成没文化。

ain't gonna 连成一块，give it to you 顺读。

说 second in command，指正职之下的第二号人物。台词里说马格鲁德 He was second in command under Mitchell，就是米切尔手下的二把手，地位排第二，最有资格知道钱的事。
want a cookie 字面是「想讨一块饼干吃吗」，实际是反讽对方想邀功讨赏，带点不屑。台词里 I don't want a cookie 就是说「我才不稀罕这个奖赏」，重点在办正事。
paid off 是给钱收买、买通。台词说只要凑出首字母对应的名字，we'll know the people who paid off the burglars，也就是查出是谁出钱买通了闯进水门的那帮人。
before the grand jury 是被大陪审团传唤问话。台词说波特被叫去过大陪审团，所以记者据此认定 P 就是波特，这条公开记录成了他们推理的支点。
