「Brandon Tells Elinor the Truth」を読み解く

What's really going on

The chapter pays off the mystery of Willoughby by refusing to make it simple. Brandon tells the story without excusing himself for having described Willoughby as 'the worst of libertines,' and then does something more painful: he corrects himself. Willoughby did love Marianne, did intend to propose, and would have married her 'had it not been' for the money. That admission is the cruelest possible comfort, and Elinor offers it as one. Marianne's reply, 'But not enough,' is the entire tragedy in three words — not that he never loved her but that his love was outweighed. The scene then cuts to Lucy's cheerful boasting about Edward's family, a reminder that other people's small triumphs keep arriving while Marianne's grief is still raw, and that the same drawing room holds both.

Theme

BetrayalWilloughby's seduction of Eliza is exposed, and his marriage to Miss Grey is measured purely in money.
HeartbreakThe truth that he did love Marianne but not enough leaves her with a comfort that wounds more than it heals.

このチャプターで学べること

  • A gentle voice can make plain facts sound brutal.
  • Lucy's pity is performance, not sympathy.
  • Money decides marriages in this world.
  • Brandon's blunt account hides his own grief.

発音のポイント

  • was with — Link was and with so they run together as one sound.
  • not enough — The t in not links to enough, sounding like no-tenough.
Dearest, was I right to tell you?

Elinor's anxious question after passing on the truth, unsure whether honesty has only added to Marianne's pain.

at least you may be certain that he loved you.

The comfort Elinor offers: even abandoned, Marianne can at least keep the belief that the love was real.

I do not know what I should do if a man treated me with so little respect.

Lucy's performance of sympathy, which turns Marianne's suffering into a compliment to herself.

I was never so happy in my entire life, Miss Dashwood.

Lucy's boast about her stay with John and Fanny, cheerful and entirely blind to the room's real feeling.

I have not yet seen Edward, but I feel sure to very soon.

Her hopeful line about Edward, which lands with dramatic irony given everything the audience knows.

このシーンについての質問

What does Brandon tell Elinor about Willoughby?

That he seduced Eliza, the girl he had once loved, left her with child, and abandoned her without a word of explanation.

What happened to Willoughby because of it?

Lady Allen learned of his behaviour, turned him out of the house, annulled his legacy, and left him next to nothing and in danger of losing Combe Magna.

Why did Willoughby abandon Marianne?

For Miss Grey and her fifty thousand pounds. Brandon admits that his intentions toward Marianne had been honourable and that he would have married her but for the money.

What does Elinor tell Marianne?

She tells her the truth and offers the one comfort left: at least she may be certain that he loved her. Marianne answers, 'But not enough.'

What is Lucy doing at the end?

Boasting. She says she has never been happier, that Edward's mother was a vast deal more than civil to her, and that she expects to see Edward very soon.
