托马斯把书一推，直接说 I hate reading（我讨厌读书）。布拉德没生气，只说 I'm not going to give up on you，其中 give up on someone（对某人放手）翻过来就是「我绝不放弃你」，又说一切都得 work extra hard（格外用功）。遇到垂头丧气的人，这两句比一句「加油」有用得多。

布拉德在学校走廊上碰到阿曼达，她问他为什么不能上他的课，他只能说她爸爸做了对她最好的选择；转头他又发现托马斯没打招呼就离开教室，罚他留校。真正的高潮是布拉德陪讨厌读书的托马斯读书：他让托马斯演自己、自己演妥瑞氏症，让托马斯亲身体会阅读有多难。托马斯问，你讨厌书怎么当老师？布拉德说，世上的一切都在书里，自己只是得 work extra hard（格外用功）才能读出来。最后他承诺不会 give up on someone（对某人放手），也不会让托马斯放弃自己。想鼓励想放弃的人，或在讲规矩时说 be supposed to（按理不该），这几句都能用。

下一章 · 16fed up受够了这场戏：怕妥瑞氏症拖累女友字面是「放弃某人」，指对一个人不再抱有指望、撒手不管。布拉德对托马斯说 I'm not going to give up on you，就是「我不会放弃你」。
可以说 give up on someone。give up 是「放弃」，后面接 on 加人，就表示对这个人的事不再抱希望，比如放弃劝一个朋友、放弃等一个人回头。
它表示「按理应该」或「按理不该」，常带一点「可你没这么做」的责备。布拉德说 you're not supposed to leave the class without asking，就是「不打招呼就走是不对的」。
work hard 是「努力」，work extra hard 是「格外用功、比别人多下功夫」。托马斯读书比谁都吃力，所以布拉德说自己得 work extra hard，才能把书里的东西读出来。
是承诺，也是安慰，语气温和但很坚定。老师说这话，等于告诉学生「不管多难我都陪你」，比直接说加油更像一个约定。
