I would have helped him。甘布雷利解释自己并非抗拒，而是「我本来会帮他的」，这里 would have 表示对过去没发生的事的假设，常跟 but 连用，比如 but he couldn't wait。
没那么严重，是夸张说法，意思是「冻出病来、要冻死了」。下雨天催人换衣服就会说 You'll catch your death of pneumonia，等于「你要冻出肺炎了」。
意思接近，都是「忍受、将就」，但 put up with 更口语。克鲁索说警察因为职责得 put up with a lot of things，就是忍下很多私下不会忍的事。
