Alonzo Tempts Hoyt With Cash, Explained:a piece of this

Alonzo hands rookie Hoyt a bag holding a quarter million and asks if he wants "a piece of this." It sounds like a gift. It isn't — his partner is measuring how far Hoyt will bend before his first day is over.

あらすじ

Their first stop is a lock to knock off and a bag inside holding a quarter million dollars. Alonzo tells Hoyt not to touch a thing, then offers him "a piece of this" and jokes about taxation without representation. Later he puts a gun in Hoyt's hand and orders him to shoot a man in the room.

「Alonzo Tempts Hoyt With Cash」を読み解く

What's really going on

The cash comes from a house they just broke into, and Alonzo treats it as an entitlement: "Ah, taxation without representation, brother." That line is doing the real work. On the surface it's a joke about the job paying badly; underneath it's a doctrine — the streets owe him, and a cop who takes nothing is a fool. Hoyt says "Not like this. I mean, no," the only clean answer he can manage, and gets a shrug back: "First time. You're not comfortable?" The gun scene pushes the same test further. Alonzo invokes the afterlife, "When you kill someone on duty, they have to be your slave in the afterlife," half-joke, half-recruitment. When Hoyt won't fire, Alonzo calls him a rookie and finishes it himself: "you want to get shit done, you got to get it done yourself." Two tests, one message: take the money, take the shot, or stay a rookie forever.

Theme

CorruptionMoney and a gun are both offered as routine parts of the job, and refusing them is treated as inexperience.
Coming of ageHoyt's first day becomes a test of who he is willing to become.

このチャプターで学べること

  • The cash is a test disguised as a gift.
  • Alonzo's myth about killing shows how he manipulates.
  • The order to shoot measures Jake more than it punishes Roger.
  • Rough slang here keeps every line at street level.

発音のポイント

  • What's in — What's in links up and can sound like what-sin.
  • Do me — Do me runs together and can sound like do-me.
  • want to — Want to is usually reduced to wanna in speech.
That's a quarter million dollars you holding right there in your hand.

The bag Hoyt is holding is worth $250,000 — Alonzo is making sure he feels the weight of it before deciding what to do.

Nothing is free in this world.

Alonzo's version of a rule: everything comes with a price, so taking the money is just how the world works.

Yeah, you want to get shit done, you got to get it done yourself.

His parting shot after Hoyt won't shoot: if you want results, stop waiting for someone else and do it yourself.

Somebody didn't sleep through ethics, did they?

A mocking compliment — Hoyt paid attention in ethics class, and Alonzo finds that naive rather than admirable.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Alonzo want Hoyt to shoot him himself?

He calls it a favor and a lesson. If Hoyt pulls the trigger, he can never go back to being the rookie who says no, and that makes him Alonzo's for good.

Is the quarter million Alonzo's to give away?

He acts like it. He jokes that it's taxation without representation and tells Hoyt to buy a minivan and put kids through college, as if the cash is his to hand out.

What does "horsefuck" mean here?

It's crude slang for being used and humiliated. Alonzo is saying he won't just stand there and let his enemies do that to him.

Does Hoyt actually shoot?

No. He agrees, then freezes, and Alonzo takes the gun back, calls him a rookie, and says that if you want something done you have to do it yourself.
