What's really going on
Ming's whole identity is built on being the good daughter who let her own panda go. When she sees Mei dancing and lying, she hears her own buried youth and panics: "How could you be so, so crass?" Mei answers by becoming exactly what Ming fears — loud, sexual, unashamed — and the fight turns into a mirror. Her confession isn't a breakdown; it's a boundary. "I'm not your little Mei Mei anymore" says the quiet part out loud: the panda was never a curse to be sealed, and neither is growing up. What scares Ming is that her daughter might repeat her regrets.
