What happens

What's really going on
The scene plays the fantasy of every embarrassed teenager: your body betrays you in public, and your mother arrives at the worst possible moment. Ming cannot see a frightened girl or a monster; she sees a man and assumes the worst, which is both her protectiveness and her blindness. "How dare you take advantage of her," she tells the clerk, treating her daughter as a sweet innocent child who could not possibly want anything.
