Buzz Gets Chosen by the Claw, Explained: What's gotten into you

Woody and Buzz sneak into Pizza Planet, where a cult of toy aliens worships the vending claw. The surface joke is Buzz's sci-fi sincerity. Underneath, the trip is slipping out of Woody's control, and the claw is about to decide who gets taken to Sid's. "The claw chooses who will go and who will stay."

What happens

Stranded after leaving Andy's house, Woody and Buzz hitch a ride on the Pizza Planet truck. Inside the arcade, Buzz hails the aliens as fellow space travelers, but when they reach the rocket-shaped claw machine, the claw lifts Buzz and drops him into Sid's prize basket, dragging Woody along with him.

Buzz Gets Chosen by the Claw, explained

What's really going on

The Pizza Planet stop looks like a detour, but it decides the second act. Buzz spends the scene treating a delivery truck as a spaceship, and the aliens feed that belief back to him, chanting "The claw is our master" to a vending machine. Woody knows how fragile Buzz's fantasy is: "Once we go into Sid's house, we won't be coming out." That line turns the comedy cold. What felt like an adventure is really two lost toys moving toward a house where toys get destroyed, and Woody is now responsible for the friend he once resented.

The claw chooses who will go and who will stay.

The aliens' chant about the arcade claw they worship, treating a random vending machine as a god that decides their fate.

Farewell, my friends. I go on to a better place.

One alien says goodbye as the claw lifts him, joking that being taken away means moving on to a better place.

Once we go into Sid's house, we won't be coming out.

Woody's grim warning: Sid destroys toys, so being carried into that house means never coming back.

This cannot be happening to me.

Buzz's disbelief as his space-ranger story collapses and real danger closes in around him.

The claw is our master.

The aliens' declaration of worship for the arcade claw, showing how completely they trust and obey it.

You guys don't get it, do you?

Woody's exasperation at the aliens, who treat the claw as a god instead of seeing an ordinary arcade machine.

Questions about this scene

Why does Buzz climb into the pizza truck?

He believes the delivery truck is a spaceship that will return to its port of origin. Woody plays along to keep him calm, but the plan backfires when the truck drives off with both of them on board.

Why does the claw grab Buzz instead of Woody?

Buzz is standing with the aliens when the claw descends, and his wings make him an easy target. Woody dodges, but Buzz is lifted out and dropped into Sid's prize basket.

What does "The claw chooses who will go and who will stay" mean?

It's the aliens' chant about the vending-machine claw they worship. To them the claw is a godlike force that randomly decides their fate, which is why it's funny when it actually picks Buzz.

Who are the little green men at Pizza Planet?

They're squeeze-toy aliens who worship the claw and repeat whatever they hear. Buzz greets them as a fellow space ranger, and moments later the claw scoops them into Sid's basket along with him.
