Helen Brand walks into Benoit Blanc's home and says her twin sister Andi did not kill herself. She has an unsent email and a missing red envelope, but Blanc is blunt: "I can find you the truth. I can gather evidence," nothing more. Then he proposes the real gamble — that Helen go to the island posing as Andi.

What happens

Helen Brand arrives at Benoit Blanc's home and tells him her twin sister, Andi, was found dead in her car — but left no note and never sent the email she had written. She believes Andi was murdered. Blanc refuses to play hero, offering only to find the truth, until Helen agrees to his strange condition: travel to Miles's Greek island pretending to be Andi.

What's really going on

The scene is a job interview and a trap at the same time. Helen comes in with grief and evidence, but Blanc will not give her what she wants — a hero who fixes everything. "I can find you the truth. I can gather evidence," he says, drawing a hard line at the police and the courts. What he does offer is stranger and more useful: he can get the suspects isolated on an island, and he needs her to be the bait. Her face is her weapon. Because nobody there knows Andi is dead, Helen can walk in as her sister and make everyone nervous enough to talk. Blanc calls her presence the essential catalyst, and he is right: the plan only works if a small-town teacher agrees to become the richest woman in the room. "Buttress" — the word he keeps repeating — is the whole ask in one verb: hold your nerve, keep your grief upright, and play the part.
