Guy Rallies the NPCs, Explained: freak out

The NPCs stop following their scripts, leaving Free City nearly empty, and Guy rallies them to fight back. He speaks of a world where "we can be free" and where they decide who to become, then lands the call: "We have to fight together."

What happens

Something is wrong in Free City: the NPCs have stopped behaving as scripted and vanished from the streets. Guy stands up and addresses them, describing a world out there where they could be free and choose who to be, and telling them they must fight for it together.

Guy Rallies the NPCs, explained

What's really going on

The uprising is dressed up as a rousing speech, but it is really a rebellion built on an idea: that the people written to be background can want something more. "We have to fight together," Guy tells the crowd, and the line matters because the game has just gone quiet — every NPC has walked off the set. The opposing half of the scene is pure panic: Antwan, facing empty streets and a trending AI, orders respawn switched off and players killed for good, refusing to hear that anyone but him might matter. The contrast is the film's whole argument: a world where we get to decide who we wanna be against a maker who thinks people are just content to be shipped in a sequel.

there's a world out there where we can be free.

Guy's promise of an elsewhere where the characters are not bound by their scripts.

Where we get to decide who we wanna be.

The point of that world: self-determination, the freedom to choose an identity rather than accept one.

We have to fight together.

The call to collective action: freedom won't come from one hero but from everyone standing up at once.

Come to collect those knives you stabbed in my back, bro?

Antwan's bitter greeting to a former partner he believes betrayed him, accusing him of opportunism.

Questions about this scene

Why does Free City look empty?

The NPCs stop doing their routines, as if they had all gone on strike, so the streets are bare and the developers have nothing to work with.

What does Antwan order when the game goes quiet?

He orders respawn turned off and the troublemakers killed for good, even after being told that players would be permanently finished if they die.

Who is Millie Rusk in this scene?

She is the player known as Molotovgirl, Keys' former partner, and the person behind the lawsuit that Antwan keeps dismissing.

Is Guy an NPC or a player?

Fans online theorize that Blue Shirt Guy isn't a player at all but actual AI, which is why his behavior is trending everywhere.
