「Augustus Falls in the Chocolate River」を読み解く

What's really going on

Wonka's factory is a wonder, but the scene keeps sliding from wonder into warning. The river is chocolate, the waterfall mixes it, and the workers are people Wonka transported from their own country: "No other factory in the world mixes its chocolate by waterfall." He tells their story as a rescue, yet he is also the man who owns them, and the film leaves that discomfort in the frame. The guests treat everything as entertainment. Veruca demands an Oompa Loompa on the spot, Augustus drinks from the river like a trough, and their parents cheer or bargain instead of stopping them. Wonka's warning, "My chocolate must never be touched by human hands," is the last line of control before the accident, and once Augustus is in the pipe, Wonka's joke about swimming shows how little he intends to soften anything. The scene is funny and unsettling at the same time.

Theme

SatireThe guests turn a working factory into a show, demanding and grabbing what they see, while Wonka treats the whole disaster as entertainment.
MoneyAugustus drinks straight from the river and Veruca demands a worker as a gift, showing how the winners treat the factory as something to consume.

  • hope it'll — The t in it drops, so hope it'll runs together.
No other factory in the world mixes its chocolate by waterfall.

Wonka's proud claim about his method. It sounds like pure wonder, but it also sets up the river and the pipe that will swallow Augustus.

But it's the only way if you want it just right.

Wonka insists the strange method is necessary for quality, which is how he justifies everything unusual about the factory.

Please don't do that. My chocolate must never be touched by human hands.

Wonka's rule for the river. It is about hygiene on the surface, but it also marks the line Augustus is about to cross.

The suspense is terrible. I hope it'll last.

Wonka admits he enjoys the tension of the accident, which tells the guests exactly how much he cares about Augustus.

Nil desperandum, dear lady. Across the desert lies the Promised Land.

Wonka consoles Mrs. Gloop with mock Latin and a grand image, promising her son is not lost while barely hiding his amusement.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Wonka let Augustus drink from the river?

He does not let him; he warns him to stop, saying his chocolate must never be touched by human hands. Augustus ignores the warning, and his mother does nothing to hold him back.

What does "nil desperandum" mean?

It is mock Latin for "never despair." Wonka uses it to calm Mrs. Gloop while the pipe is about to carry her son to the Fudge Room.

Why does Wonka mention the Promised Land?

He is dressing up bad news in grand language. Saying her son is heading somewhere better keeps the joke going while Mrs. Gloop panics about him.

Who are the Oompa Loompas?

Small workers Wonka brought from Loompaland to live and work in the factory. He presents it as a rescue from beasts, though they still do his labor.

Will Augustus be all right?

Wonka says the pipe leads to the Fudge Room and that pressure will push him through, so he is in no real danger. Mrs. Gloop is sent there to collect him.
