「Helga Warns Sidney Again」を読み解く

What's really going on

The psychic thread closes here and opens again. Helga's warning is specific enough to be unsettling, 'This is the man I warn you of,' and her advice is plain: get rid of him. But the name she once half-heard is cleared up by a typewriter, 'Corona, not Colonna,' which shows how her gift works and how it still needs a lucky detail. Sidney turns all of it to his advantage, claiming he meant to dismiss Clifford all along. When Clifford returns, they dress the truth up as karate practice, and Sidney lays down the rule he lives by, 'The closer you stick to the truth, the better.' The scene shows how quickly a warning becomes cover.

Theme

DeceptionSidney turns a real warning into part of his story, claiming he had already decided to send Clifford away.
LiesThe attack is recast as karate practice, and the rule is to stay as close to the truth as possible while lying.

このチャプターで学べること

  • A prophecy lands harder when it names a face.
  • Sidney's calm is a performance, not a plan.
  • Even the weather gets blamed for a bad night.
  • The nastiest line comes only after the guest leaves.

発音のポイント

  • send away — The d links into away as one sound.
  • want I — Link want I so it sounds like one word.
  • stick to the — Run stick to together and weaken the to.
The closer you stick to the truth, the better.

Sidney's rule for a convincing lie: keep the story as close to what really happened as possible.

But again tonight, I feel danger here in this room.

Helga repeats the reading she gave before, insisting the danger in the room has not gone away.

This is the man I warn you of. Man in boots who attacks you.

She identifies Clifford by the boots, turning her earlier vision into a specific accusation.

Candles are not why I come. I have many candles.

A dry deflation of the candle errand, making clear her real reason for returning is the warning.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Helga come back?

She says the feeling is stronger than before and that Sidney should not keep the man in the house. The candles are just an excuse for the visit.

What does 'Corona, not Colonna' mean?

Helga earlier gave the name Colonna. Seeing the typewriter brand Smith Corona shows she misheard it, which explains part of her confusing vision.

Why does Sidney pretend he was going to dismiss Clifford?

It gives him a reason to act against Clifford and makes Helga's warning seem to confirm a decision he had already made, instead of a reaction to her.

What is the karate story?

Sidney tells Helga that Clifford's boots and the attacking vision were just the two of them practicing karate, a cover for what really happened.
