A Staff Member Shoots Himself at Dinner, Explained:name dropping
The room is still telling itself this is theatre. A staff member has just shot himself in front of the guests, yet the reassurance keeps coming: "This is what you're paying for." When people finally rise to leave, the answer is calm and final — there is no boat, no signal, and no way out.
あらすじ
A staff member shoots himself in front of the guests, and most of them assume it is part of the show. Then reality breaks through: there is no boat to leave on and no phone service. When a guest offers to handle the situation, a staff member asks which hand he will use, then removes one of his fingers. The dinner is no longer theatre.

What's really going on
The guests keep reaching for the word "theatre" because the alternative is unbearable. One insists, "This is just theater, right?" and another calls the violence "stagecraft" — as if naming it as performance could keep it at a distance. But the staff never break character, and their calm is the real threat: no boat, no signal, the polite question about "which hand." This is where the film stops being a satire about fine dining and becomes a story about people who cannot leave. Even the most confident guest discovers that his authority means nothing here.

このシーンについての質問
Why do the guests keep calling it a show?
They want the violence to be part of the menu because the alternative is that they are trapped with people who will hurt them. Calling it theater is a way of staying calm.
Who shoots himself at the dinner?
A member of the restaurant staff, in front of the whole room. The guests hear the shot and see the body, and some still insist it looked "very real" but must be stagecraft.
Can the guests just leave the island?
No. When someone announces "We're leaving," the answer is that there is no boat, and a helicopter would be impossible without phone service. The guests are not free to go.
Why does the staff ask which hand?
A guest offers to "handle this," so the staff turn it into a cruel choice about which hand he will use — then take one of his fingers. Any attempt at authority is punished.
What does "name dropping" mean in that last line?
It means mentioning famous people you know in order to seem important. A guest admits the claim of knowing the chef was invented, calling it name dropping.
