「Sidney Kills Clifford」を読み解く

What's really going on

The murder itself is almost off-screen; what the scene dwells on is the aftermath, and that is the point. Sidney's first line over the body is not guilt but housekeeping: 'Right on the rug. One point for neatness.' He then treats the killing as a problem of logistics, checking on Myra's heart and outlining how a would-be playwright might vanish. Myra supplies the guilt he refuses: 'We'll go to prison for life.' Their exchanges lay out a marriage with two very different appetites, his for a hit play and a comeback, hers for getting through the night. The horror is in the tone, not the act.

Theme

Dark humorA man stands over the body he just made and scores the fall's neatness, turning a murder into a punchline.
AmbitionSidney frames the killing as the price of being a winner again and the envy of everyone he resents.

このチャプターで学べること

  • A polite line after a murder can be the coldest of all.
  • The envy line hides ambition and insecurity in one breath.
  • Scoring a killing for neatness shows how the men treat death.

発音のポイント

  • Here we are — Link here, we and are so they run together.
  • convalesce on — Link the final n of convalesce into on.

My darling, your heart seems to have held up quite well.

Sidney's calm check on Myra after the killing, treating her shock as a medical matter and himself as a considerate husband.

I'm going to be the envy of all the people I envy.

His motive stated as a punchline: success means turning the tables on everyone he has resented.

Deathtrap is promising, but not that promising.

Before the attack, Sidney's dry assessment of Clifford's script, the last ordinary line before the violence.

Right on the rug. One point for neatness.

The line that makes the murder eerie: he assesses the corpse like a stage manager scoring a scene, and gets the laugh.

このシーンについての質問

Does Sidney really kill Clifford?

Yes. Clifford is still wearing the handcuffs when Sidney attacks him, and Myra screams through it. The rest of the scene shows Sidney planning what to do with the body.

What is Sidney's plan for the body?

He suggests burying it behind the garage, then decides the vegetable patch is easier to dig. He makes Myra help him carry it.

How does Sidney explain Clifford's disappearance?

He tells Myra a young would-be playwright simply walked away from his house-sitting job, leaving his clothes and typewriter, and that the police will never care.

Why does Sidney say he will be the envy of all the people he envies?

Because Deathtrap will make him a success again. He wants the people he has resented to look up to him, and he treats the killing as the price of that.
