Olivia Mistakes Sebastian for Cesario, explained

What happens

Sebastian arrives in Illyria and is greeted by Olivia, who mistakes him for Cesario. She accuses him of breaking his promise and declares her love before everyone. Confused but charmed, Sebastian goes along with it, wondering if he is dreaming or mad, and follows her home. He even says he would die a thousand deaths for her.

What's really going on

This is the plot's engine firing at last: the twin brother appears just as everyone is looking for the sister, and Olivia seizes the wrong man. The comedy is that Sebastian has no context at all — he does not know Olivia, does not know why she loves him, and simply accepts the good fortune: "After him I love more than I love these eye, more than my life." His earlier speech about 'savage jealousy' belongs to Olivia's devotion in his mind, but he is really just adrift in someone else's story. Olivia, meanwhile, is entirely serious: she calls him 'Cesario,' demands he keep his promise, and takes his willingness as proof. Both characters act on wrong information, and neither is lying, which is what makes the scene work as both romance and farce. Sebastian's wonder — 'How am I beguiled!' — could describe the whole play.

Key lines & what they mean

“A savage jealousy that sometimes savours nobly.”
Sebastian's comment on Olivia's fierce love: it is wild and possessive, yet there is something noble in its intensity.
“My thoughts are ripe in mischief.”
Olivia declares her scheme is ready: she has decided to act, and there is no stopping her.
“I'll sacrifice the lamb that I do love to spite a raven's heart within dove.”
She would destroy the one she loves to punish someone who hides a cruel heart under a gentle look.
“Fellow, thy words are madness.”
Olivia tells Antonio that his claims sound like insanity. It shows how completely Sebastian's arrival upends everyone's reason.
“Who does do you wrong?”
A blunt question asking who has harmed someone. It demands a name and a reason, refusing vague complaints.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why does Olivia think Sebastian is Cesario?

The twins look identical. Olivia has only ever seen Cesario, so when Sebastian appears she naturally takes him for the same young man and acts on it.

Why does Sebastian go along with Olivia?

He is confused but struck by her and decides not to resist his luck. Not knowing her story, he accepts the sudden affection and follows her.

What does 'savage jealousy' mean in the scene?

It describes Olivia's wild, possessive love. Sebastian calls it savage yet noble, because even a jealous passion can seem impressive in its intensity.

Why does Sebastian say he has been beguiled?

He is swept up in Olivia's sudden love and cannot explain it. 'Beguiled' means charmed and deceived at once, so he feels carried along without understanding why.

What is about to happen after Sebastian follows Olivia?

He goes with her, and she takes him as her love. This mistake will drive the plot's ending, where the twins are finally sorted out.
