The story so far
Everything you need before watchingSally has just left Jack. At lunch she announces she likes being single. Judy is unconvinced: she had the opposite impression. Sally calls the dread anticipatory anxiety, then compares divorce to yanking a bad tooth. Then she turns on Judy: that angry night, she says, they touched a nerve, because Sally did what Judy secretly wants. Before Judy can finish denying it, Sally already has Michael Gates in mind.

Golden lines
A great line in its own right — why and how to use it“I like being single.”
I like being...
Single suits me. / I'm enjoying being on my own.
informal
“You can't stay together out of fear, because then you know what you become?”
You can't stay together out of...
Don't stay just because you're scared. / Fear is not a reason to stay.
neutral
“All the festering wounds of your marriage, the disappointments, the resentments, they're gone in one clean yank, and you're free.”
They're gone in one clean...
It's like ripping off a bandage. / One clean break and you're done.
informal
Monologue
One character carrying the scene — shadow the whole passageWell, that's all anticipatory anxiety. When you calm down, you realize it's not as bad as you fantasized. It's like pulling a bad tooth. All the festering wounds of your marriage, the disappointments, the resentments, they're gone in one clean yank, and you're free.
