这章由两部分组成。前半段是汉森写给俄方的信，署名的“拉蒙”正是他的化名：他要五万美元，却说超过十万美元一次就用不上；用 I am much safer if you know little about me（你们对我了解得越少，我就越安全）解释自己为何不肯露面；还用 liken to（把……比作）把美国说成一个强壮却迟钝的孩子，最后写 Nothing lasts forever（没有什么能长久）。后半段，他守在门口等晚归的埃里克，一句 Very disappointed in you, young man（年轻人，我对你很失望），然后用送花、要地址的方式试探对方。想学正式英文信的表达、以及上司话里带刺的关心，这两段都很典型。

I am much safer if you know little about me。safer 是比较级“更安全”，know little about 是“对……了解得很少”，整句就是告诉对方别打听自己，这样反而对双方都安全。
liken A to B 就是“把 A 比作 B”。台词 The U.S. can be errantly likened to... 意思是美国也许会被错误地比作……，注意句子用了被动语态 be likened to。
slog 是费力地走，slog around 指在难走的地方来回跋涉。台词说穿着西装没法在寸把深的泥里蹚来蹚去（在泥泞里艰难跋涉），带着点抱怨，很有人味。
That's very kind of you。句式 be very kind of you 用来感谢对方的体贴或帮忙。台词里埃里克回了一句 That's very kind of you, boss，表面客气，其实也在应付老板的试探。
commit oneself 指把自己押进去、明确表态或投入一件事。台词 I like to know before I commit myself 意思是“我出手之前喜欢先弄明白”，常用在谈条件、做决定之前。
