The Wrong Question at Cards, Explained:rub it in

A card game played for Doodles ends in a flush. Someone tries to ask something real, and the other person jumps to bodies changing and puberty. "That wasn't what I was gonna ask at all" shuts it down. Under the joke sits a school talent show, a guitar, and a warning not to repeat a line about girls.

「The Wrong Question at Cards」を読み解く

What's really going on

Poker with Doodles is the opener. A flush beats aces over kings, someone says the Doodles are all theirs, and "Don't rub it in" answers the gloating. After the pot, "Can I ask you something?" opens a mismatch. The reply goes straight to a changing body, growing, and a funny feeling, and it keeps going until "Stop talking." "That wasn't what I was gonna ask at all" and "It wasn't even close" correct the guess in plain words. The question was a school talent show: Mom thinks they should play, and the asker is unsure. The reply is "you will be great," plus "the chicks, they love guitar players," shut with "Don't tell your mom I said that about girls." When others return, "your son cheats" is tossed out, "Gorgeous" is said, and "You took the words right out of my mouth" agrees without a second compliment. Supper is the exit. The scene never shows the show itself.

  • beat two — Let the two t sounds meet without a stop.
  • because it's — Keep because light and don't split it's into it is.
  • even close — Weight close, and let even pass quickly.
  • How'd it — Did is already inside How'd, so keep it close.
Look at that. Me too. I'm not scared because it's aces over kings.

Someone calls because they hold aces over kings. A flush is then shown, and that hand takes the Doodles.

It's about your body and how it's changing, isn't it?

A guess that the unasked question is puberty and a changing body. The following lines reject that guess outright.

Yes. Look at all these Doodles, and they're all mine.

Claiming every Doodle after the flush. The line says they all belong to the speaker now.

Yeah, you will be great. I heard you play. You're really good, man.

Encouragement for the talent show. The speaker has heard them play and calls it really good.

Don't tell your mom I said that about girls.

A request to keep the girls comment from Mom, right after the line about guitar players.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

It follows "Gorgeous" and means that compliment was exactly what the listener was about to say.

このシーンについての質問

Why does the talk jump to puberty?

Someone opens with "Can I ask you something?" The reply guesses "It's about your body and how it's changing," and keeps going into growing and a funny feeling. It is stopped by "That wasn't what I was gonna ask at all."

What was actually being asked?

A school talent show. The line is "My mom thinks I should play in it," and the asker is unsure. The response is "maybe you should play in it" and "Yeah, you will be great. I heard you play."

What does "aces over kings" mean here?

It is poker talk for three aces and two kings. The speaker is not scared to match the bet because of that hand. A flush is shown next and takes the Doodles.

Why the warning not to tell Mom?

It comes right after "And the chicks, they love guitar players." "Don't tell your mom I said that about girls" treats that comment as something Mom should not hear.

Does anyone prove the son cheated?

No. One voice says "your son cheats" and "He absolutely does." The comeback is "Does not." No hand is replayed, so the lines only give the accusation and the denial.
