「Lizzie Comes Home to the House」を読み解く

What's really going on

The arrival of Lizzie turns the new house into a home, and the evening settles into the kind of talk families have when they are happy and slightly embarrassed. Stella Meredith keeps coming up because she never comes over. Pamela has written and been answered by the commander instead, and Rick is sure the excuse is thin: "You were just as sorry for that child as I was," Pamela tells him, catching the pity he pretends not to feel. What he will admit is stranger and more honest — "There's kind of a sleeping-beauty magic about the kid." He has hoped to be the one who wakes her, and he knows he is not; his joke about being Prince Charmless is the closest he gets to saying he is in love. Lizzie, who sees everything, ends the evening by sending Pamela to bed.

Theme

LonelinessStella is kept alone behind the commander's refusals, and the talk about her is full of pity for a girl shut away from company.
SecretsThe commander answers invitations for Stella and blocks every visit, and the others suspect the real reason is being hidden.

There's kind of a sleeping-beauty magic about the kid.

Rick's way of describing Stella: she seems enchanted and untouched, like a fairy-tale figure asleep inside the house.

Stop pushing her into the nursery. She's 20. She said so herself.

Pamela's warning against treating Stella as a child; she is twenty and has said so, so the tenderness needs to respect that.

I'd thought I'd done something toward breaking the spell.

Rick admits he believed his attention might free Stella from whatever keeps her closed off, and that his effort has failed.

You were just as sorry for that child as I was.

Pamela calls out the pretence: Rick mocks her sentiment, but he pities Stella exactly as much as she does.

このシーンについての質問

Who is Lizzie Flynn?

She is the Fitzgeralds' old housekeeper, and she has come to live with them in the new house. She calls Rick Master Rick and Pam miss, and she treats the big house with delighted awe.

Why hasn't Pamela met Stella Meredith?

Pamela wrote to invite her to tea and only got a reply from the commander saying Stella was not strong enough for invitations. Pamela suspects it is really because the Fitzgeralds are not nice to know.

What does Rick mean by sleeping-beauty magic?

He is describing Stella as a girl who seems enchanted and untouched, as if she were still asleep in a fairy tale. It explains why he cannot help liking her, though he jokes that he is no prince.

Why does Rick call himself Prince Charmless?

He had hoped he might break whatever spell keeps Stella shut away, and by the end of the evening he admits it has not worked, so he jokes that he is the prince with no charm.
