They Plan a Séance for Stella, Explained:mind at rest

Stella is on the edge of a collapse, so Pamela proposes reaching her through her dead mother. "Why don't we try to get a message from Mary Meredith?" she asks, and the others slowly agree to hold a séance at Windward House — with a comforting message they have already written themselves.

あらすじ

Stella is close to a breakdown, and Dr. Scott admits a country doctor cannot do much for her. Pamela suggests holding a séance to get a message from Stella's mother, Mary Meredith, and even writes the comforting words in advance. Rick scoffs at the idea, but they finally agree: the séance will take place at Windward House, with Stella present and the others watching her all the time.

「They Plan a Séance for Stella」を読み解く

What's really going on

The plan is dishonest, and everyone in the room knows it. Pamela wants to calm Stella, and the only comfort the girl will accept is a word from her mother, so the answer is to invent one: the séance is staged, the message is written in advance, and Rick's job is to move the glass. He argues that he will not cheat Stella, and is answered with the reason the cheat is worth it — "Crikey, no! I want to set Stella's mind at rest. She's just about torn in two." What makes the scene strange rather than cynical is that Mary Meredith may genuinely be present. The script they prepare says she has found peace and that Stella should stay away from Windward House; but they are writing instructions for a ghost they cannot see, and the house may not follow the script.

Theme

Death & griefEveryone is trying to reach Mary Meredith to calm the daughter she left behind, so the plan is driven by loss rather than curiosity.
DeceptionThe séance is arranged in advance, with a message written for Stella, so the comfort they want to give depends on a lie.

このチャプターで学べること

  • The kindest plan in the scene is also a lie.
  • Pam and Rick argue over whether belief can heal.
  • Dr. Scott measures the problem as a doctor, not a friend.
  • The fake message is written to end Stella's waiting.

発音のポイント

  • got a passion — Link got and a, stress passion, weaken for.
  • afraid I might — Link afraid and I so they sound joined.
  • supposed to — Supposed to reduces to something like supposeta.
Not I. She's been listening for a voice that's been still for 17 years.

Someone refuses to talk Stella out of the house, explaining that she has been waiting to hear her dead mother for seventeen years.

Crikey, no! I want to set Stella's mind at rest. She's just about torn in two.

The motive behind the séance: not a trick to amuse them, but a way to calm a girl torn between her grandfather's rules and her need to know.

Why don't we try to get a message from Mary Meredith?

The suggestion that starts the plan: if the house is haunted by Mary, then Mary is the one who can speak to Stella.

That's how the dead are supposed to communicate with the living.

The explanation of what a séance is for: the living set out letters, a glass and a code, and wait for the dead to move them.

このシーンについての質問

Why do they decide to hold a séance?

Because Stella is on the edge of a collapse and nobody can reason with her. Pamela hopes a message from her mother, Mary Meredith, will set her mind at rest and keep her away from Windward House.

Why is Rick against the séance?

He thinks it is a fake and a fraud played on a frightened girl. He jokes that it would be easy to move a glass around and claim it is Mary Meredith.

What is the fake message they plan to give Stella?

A message pretending to be from her mother, saying that since finding her the mother has found peace, and telling Stella to stay away from Windward House.

Why must the séance be held at Windward House?

Because the haunting belongs to that house. They also know it is dangerous for Stella there, so they agree that they will stay with her the whole time.
