「Trent Schools Mike in Vegas」を読み解く

What's really going on

Everything here is a performance, and Trent is the director. He sells Mike a theory of cool — that wanting something too much is the one thing that ruins you — and even turns his friend into an audience: "Oh, they're gonna notice me and you, 'cause they're watching." The casino is old and half-empty, which is exactly why Trent calls it old school and claims it as their kind of place. The joke is that the pose of not needing anything collides with a place that runs on wanting things, and the moment Mike actually puts money down, the illusion of being the guy behind the guy meets a table minimum. His scotch order — on the rocks, single malt, any Glen — is the same act: a beginner performing expertise.

Theme

IdentityTrent and Mike are performing a richer, cooler self; the whole Vegas trip is an act that the casino quickly sees through.
MoneyThe plan is to act like money so it comes to you, but the table minimum reduces the fantasy to a $300 bankroll.

このチャプターで学べること

  • Old school is a taste, not just a time period.
  • Ordering scotch is Mike performing confidence.
  • The dealer's politeness is the real power move.
  • Looking like the money is a whole performance.

発音のポイント

  • fuckin' Pirate — The g in fuckin' drops entirely in fast speech.
  • pull me a — Pull me a runs together with a weak me.
  • behind the — Behind the links up and the weakens to tha.
  • like the — Like the links up twice with a weak the.
The beautiful babies don't work midnights to 6:00 on Wednesday.

Trent's snobbish put-down of the women on the night shift: the 'beautiful' ones, he claims, would never be working those hours midweek.

Now the trick is we gotta look like we don't need the shit, then they give us shit for free.

Trent's core theory of seduction and status: act indifferent to what you want, and people will hand it over for free.

Oh, they're gonna notice me and you, 'cause they're watching.

Trent's boast that they will be noticed — and his aside that the room is already watching, which mostly means the staff.

Perhaps you'd be more comfortable at one of our lower stakes tables.

The dealer's polite way of telling Mike he is at the wrong table: it sounds helpful, but it is a quiet humiliation.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Trent insist on the old-school casino?

He thinks the new flashy places are for tourists and that a classic casino suits him and Mike. He wants to be a fresh face in a room he considers his kind of scene.

Why does Trent tell Mike to look like he doesn't need anything?

It is his theory of cool: if you seem indifferent, people and even the casino will offer you things. The pose depends on never appearing eager.

Why does the dealer ask Mike to put the money on the table?

House rules. A dealer cannot take cash by hand; the money has to be laid on the table to be changed into chips. The dealer also notes the table's $100 minimum.

Why does Mike order a single malt scotch?

To look like a high-class regular. Instead of a simple order, he names Glenlivet and Glenfiddich and says any single malt — an outsider performing expertise.
