Come Sit by Me, Explained:come sit by me

At the salon, Ouiser delivers her verdict on a lifetime of bad marriages and ungrateful children, ending with 'I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years.' Clairee gets the last word with the film's most quoted line: if you can't say anything nice about anybody, come sit by me.

あらすじ

It is Christmas at Truvy's salon, where Annelle has decorated with bargain ornaments she made herself. Ouiser arrives to complain about her life and her family, then declares she has simply been in a bad mood for forty years. Clairee, teasing her own relatives, delivers the line that gives the chapter its name.

「Come Sit by Me」を読み解く

What's really going on

The chapter is the film at its best, which is to say it is mostly people talking. Ouiser's long complaint — two worthless husbands, three ungrateful children, friends who only like her because she has 'more money than God' — is funny and also entirely bleak, and the women let her have it, because hearing her out is the kindness. Her summary line, 'I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years,' gets a laugh precisely because it is true. Against that, Clairee's inversion of the old rule — 'if you can't say anything nice about anybody, come sit by me' — turns gossip into a welcome. The chapter then quietly pays off the teasing: Owen Jenkins, the man Ouiser ran off decades ago, actually appears. The jokes have consequences here, and the film never pretends otherwise.

Theme

Dark humorOuiser turns a lifetime of disappointment into deadpan one-liners, and the women laugh because the bitterness is real.
FriendshipClairee invites gossip instead of forbidding it, and the salon treats Ouiser's complaints as something worth hearing.

このチャプターで学べること

  • Ouiser's insults shield an old heartbreak.
  • Clairee dresses gossip in good manners.
  • The salon turns Christmas into a battlefield of wit.
  • A reunion can reopen wounds the years had closed.

発音のポイント

  • since God was a boy — Stress God and boy, and let was a blur together.
  • not about to — Not about links together, and about to often reduces to about-ta.
I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years.

Ouiser's deadpan self-diagnosis, which turns a lifetime of complaint into a punchline the whole salon can enjoy.

The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.

Her mock-philosophical line about fashion, delivered as if it were a serious truth, which is why it lands.

Well, as somebody always said, if you can't say anything nice about anybody, come sit by me.

Clairee's inverted proverb, which makes insulting your relatives into a social invitation rather than a sin.

My God, you look different. Have you shrunk?

Her greeting to Owen after decades, blunt and affectionate at once, and the first sign that the old story is not finished.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Ouiser complain so much?

She says she married the two most worthless men in the universe and raised three ungrateful children, and has simply been in a bad mood for forty years.

What does Clairee mean by come sit by me?

She is turning the old rule about not saying anything at all if you cannot say something nice into a joke: if you like to gossip, sit with her.

Who is Owen Jenkins?

An old friend of Ouiser's who left Chinquapin Parish long ago. He has just moved back after his wife died, and he comes to see her again.

How does Ouiser greet Owen?

With a blunt compliment. She tells him he looks different and asks if he has shrunk, though he insists she has hardly changed at all.

What is Annelle's decoration joke?

She bought mismatched manger scenes cheaply and made baby Jesus ornaments, which leads to the joke that the elves have gone berserk.
