「Annelle Bans Beer From Her Fridge」を読み解く

What's really going on

The chapter sets two kinds of faith side by side. Annelle's new religion is absolute and a little comic — beer cannot stay in her fridge, and her boyfriend Sammy is left joking that he cannot follow her into the hereafter. The Eatentons, by contrast, handle the worst night of their lives with jokes: the transplant becomes a running gag about sawing a body in half, and "A Tale of Two Kidneys." Nobody says out loud that Shelby may not survive; instead her one honest line — "After tomorrow it'll be a long time before I can pick him up again" — carries the fear for everyone. The final note, that God does not care which church you go to as long as you show up, quietly answers Annelle's strictness with something warmer.

Theme

FaithAnnelle's strict new religion clashes with Sammy, while the ending insists that showing up matters more than which church.
Family loveOn the eve of the transplant the family jokes and gathers close, with Shelby's quiet line about her son carrying the fear.

After tomorrow it'll be a long time before I can pick him up again.

They all know how much they mean to each other.

An outsider's observation about the Eatentons on the eve of the operation, spoken almost like envy.

God don't care which church you go to, long as you show up.

A plain-spoken reassurance that faith is about showing up, aimed at Annelle's rigid certainty.

They basically have to saw her in half to get the kidney out.

The family's black-humour version of M'Lynn's surgery, said to make the frightening thing bearable.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Annelle object to beer in her fridge?

She has become strictly religious and will not keep liquor in her own home; she tells Sammy he can do what he likes in his refrigerator but not in hers.

Why does Sammy say he won't spend fifty years with someone he won't run into in the hereafter?

It is his reaction to Annelle's new faith: he cannot picture sharing a life with someone whose religion would keep them apart in the next one.

Whose kidney is being transplanted?

Shelby is receiving a kidney from her mother, M'Lynn, and the family is gathered the night before the operation.

Why does the family joke about the transplant?

The jokes — sawing a body in half, A Tale of Two Kidneys — are how they handle fear; the film lets them laugh so the audience feels how scared they are.

Why does Annelle rush off to church?

It is her Sunday to count the offering and she is already late, so she hurries the beans to the Eatentons and then goes on to church.
