「Shelby's Monster Motif Shower」を読み解く

What's really going on

The chapter is built as a joke that gradually stops being funny. Most of it is the wedding shower at its most chaotic: gifts, gossip, Ouiser's handwriting compared to a killer's, and then the long argument about art in which Ouiser refuses, line by line, to see plays, movies, or books. Everything she says is a punchline, and Clairee's patient summary — that Ouiser would be more pleasant if she occupied her time — only makes her sharper; 'I am pleasant!' she insists. Yet the scene tips without warning. After the women leave, the film cuts to Halloween at home, where Shelby is dressing her son for trick-or-treating and then, in a handful of ordinary words, something goes wrong — 'What's the matter?' and her name, called over and over. The comedy does not prepare us for it, which is the point: the film lets the laughter run as long as it can, then simply takes Shelby away.

Theme

FriendshipThe shower is all teasing and laughter, and the women's affection shows in how mercilessly they joke.
Death & griefThe chapter ends by cutting from the salon's laughter to Shelby collapsing at home, without warning or transition.

このチャプターで学べること

  • Ouiser insults people and defends herself in one breath.
  • The party jokes barely cover the fear in the room.
  • Shelby's collapse turns comedy into silence.
  • Southern politeness can cut deeper than a curse.

発音のポイント

  • shove it where — Shove it links into shov-it, with a small pause before where.
I saw Drum Eatenton this morning at the Piggly Wiggly and I smiled at the son of a bitch before I could help myself.

Ouiser's proof that she is pleasant, which consists of insulting a man in the middle of the compliment about herself.

You know, you would be a much more contented, pleasant person if you would find ways to occupy your time.

Clairee's advice, patient on the surface, and the remark that sets off the rest of the argument.

You broaden your horizons your way, I'll broaden my horizons mine.

Ouiser's refusal of the whole idea, turning Clairee's phrase back on her as a matter of taste.

I'll write a check. I support art. I just don't have to see it.

Her conclusion on culture: she will pay for art as long as she is never asked to sit through any.
