Arno Traps Howard in the Store, Explained: get yourself together

What's really going on

The scene is Howard cornered, and it shows exactly how he survives: by talking, stalling, and finding one more reason to believe the night will turn. He is trapped behind bulletproof glass with angry men outside, and instead of opening the door he tries to sell them on the same bet he has sold himself. His argument that the league needs star players — "They want stars." — is nonsense as an explanation and perfect as a portrait; Howard hears a conspiracy in everything because it lets him keep hoping. The men outside only want their money, and Howard keeps promising that the game will make it all work. He cannot stop gambling, even with his life on the line, and the scene makes that fatal quality feel almost admirable.
