Julia Comforts Howard After the Auction, Explained: you're my home

Howard comes home wrecked and wants to be left alone; Julia won't let him disappear into it. "You're my home. You could come to me," she says, then unzips her skirt to show a tattoo reading "Howie." It's a confession disguised as comfort — she offers everything, and he can barely accept any of it.

What happens

After the failed auction, Howard shows up at Julia's place in a wreck, saying "I don't want to talk about it." She tries to reach him, admits she has nowhere to go, then unzips her skirt to reveal a tattoo that reads "Howie," telling him he is her home and that she loves him. He keeps insisting he isn't worth it. The doorbell interrupts them.

What's really going on

Howard treats his collapse as something to hide — "Just leave me alone, please" — but Julia hears it as a door she can still walk through. She confesses her own loneliness first ("I don't have any place to go"), then makes the night about him: the tattoo, the claim that he is her home, the blunt "I love you." What she can't get past is that he keeps flinching. "I'm not worth it," he says; "Yes, you do," she answers, as if repetition could outvote his self-loathing. The cruelty of the scene is that her comfort is real and still not enough: minutes later the doorbell rings, and Howard's other life — the men he owes — walks back in. Love offered at the exact moment ruin arrives.
