Jordan Sails Into a Storm, Explained

News of a death barely slows Jordan down. Within minutes he's planning a dash to Switzerland for the inheritance, and when his girlfriend protests that they should attend the funeral, he answers: "She's dead and she's not going anywhere." Then he orders the yacht straight into a storm to make the trip.

Jordan Sails Into a Storm, explained

What happens

Jordan learns his aunt Emma has died and immediately starts thinking about the Swiss bank account linked to her estate. He loads Naomi and Donnie onto a yacht, tells Captain Ted to head for Monaco and then drive into Switzerland, and ignores the captain's warning about rough seas. The yacht runs into a gale, equipment goes overboard, and Donnie panics while Jordan demands his drugs.

What's really going on

The scene mixes slapstick with something colder: a man who turns a funeral into a travel itinerary. His grief is a formality — 'Not to worry, Jordan,' the Swiss banker says, and the news that the estate has paperwork only makes Jordan laugh, 'Fantastic! Well, that's good news!' Even his girlfriend's mourning is an obstacle to be scheduled around: 'She's dead and she's not going anywhere.' The storm is the bill for that attitude. When the sea turns dangerous, Jordan's instinct is still appetite, not survival — he wants the Quaaludes before he dies, and he is furious that Donnie won't fetch them. The yacht may be tipping over, but the real joke is that nothing, not even a gale, interrupts his self-interest.

Key lines & what they mean

“She's dead and she's not going anywhere.”
Jordan's cold argument for skipping the funeral: the body will still be there later, so business can come first.
“I will not die sober!”
As the yacht is battered by the storm, Jordan's one demand is to be high — he refuses to face possible death clear-headed.
“I got you, baby. I got you. Trust me, okay?”
He comforts Naomi during the gale, promising he has hold of her while the boat pitches in the dark.
“I did a lot of bad shit. I'm going to hell, Jordan!”
Donnie's terror turns into confession during the storm; convinced they are drowning, he fears punishment for his life.

Theme

  • Money — A death is treated as a bank transfer: Jordan's first thought is the Swiss inheritance, and the funeral is only a scheduling problem.
  • Corruption — The plan is built to dodge the law — sail to Monaco, drive into Switzerland, keep the passports unstamped so the money stays hidden.

Questions, then the lines
Whose death does Jordan hear about?

Aunt Emma's. He treats the news less as a loss than as a chance to claim the money tied to her Swiss account before anyone else can.

Why do they sail to Monaco instead of flying to Switzerland?

To avoid a paper trail. By sailing to Monaco and driving across the border, they can keep their passports unstamped and the money's movement harder to trace.

Why does Jordan refuse to wait for the funeral?

He wants to reach Switzerland first. In his view the dead can wait — 'She's dead and she's not going anywhere' — while the money and the legal paperwork cannot.

What goes wrong during the trip?

The yacht sails straight into a gale. Water pours in, a Jet Ski goes overboard, and the boat nearly tips, leaving Donnie screaming that he doesn't want to die.

What does Jordan want during the storm?

His Quaaludes. Even as the boat floods, he orders Donnie downstairs to fetch the drugs, insisting he will not die sober.
