What's really going on

The scene is the moment the story stops being a rumor. For most of the film the team has been chasing names one by one, and here the names collapse into a single overwhelming figure: "Eighty-seven priests in Boston." The shock in the room is not just at the number but at how close their own reporting came — three off Sipe's estimate — which tells them the scale is real and their method works. From there the scene turns into action, because horror has to become a plan: call Macleish, print the list. What makes it land is the contrast between the flat delivery of data and the obvious disbelief behind it. Nobody argues about whether to proceed; they simply start, which is how the film treats the whole investigation.
