The Jersey at the Dinner Party
❝ Monologue · 5 lines Ronnie's Dinner-Table Confession
Pat Meets Tiffany
Pat goes to Ronnie's Sunday party wearing an Eagles jersey from Jake instead of the outfit his mother picked. He worries it was a mistake, but Ronnie tells him to come as he is. During dinner Ronnie admits he feels crushed by family, work, and the new baby. Later Pat meets Veronica's sister, Tiffany.
The scene works on two levels at once. On the surface it is a comedy of manners: Pat shows up in a football jersey to a dinner where he is expected to dress properly, and his mother and Ronnie's wife both have opinions about it. Underneath, it is about men who cannot say what is wrong. Ronnie has the house, the job, and the new baby, and he admits none of it makes him happy — 'I feel like I'm getting crushed' — while Pat, who tells him not to bring it up, is quietly rehearsing compliments for a wife who is not there. The jersey is Pat's attempt to be honest about who he is, and the dinner is everyone else's attempt to keep up appearances. Tiffany's arrival at the end sets the next half of the film in motion.
A1–C2 is the CEFR scale. Cards above the level you pick fade, and playback will not auto-pause on them.
“Guest of honour. Come however you wanna come.”
It hands a guest both a title and total freedom in one breath, which is why it sticks.
Informal
“No disrespect, it's not personal, but this is the time to strike.”
It softens the insult first, then lands the hard pitch, a move people reuse in real deals.
Neutral
“I see you made an effort. I'm gonna be better with my wife.”
A compliment slides straight into a private vow, showing how Pat turns every moment into a plan.
Neutral
“You can't be happy all the time.”
A flat truism that lifts the pressure to be happy: nobody can, all the time.
Neutral
“I made a mistake. I shouldn't have worn this.”
Two plain sentences own the mistake and pin it on the jersey: panic, out loud.
Informal
Listen to me. I feel like I'm getting crushed and... - (WHISPERS) Crushed by what? - Everything. Family, the baby, the job. The fucking dicks at work, and it's like, you know... Like, I'm trying to do this, you know, and then I'm, like, suffocating.

She is a stickler for how things should be done, and a sports jersey is not what she considers appropriate for a dinner party.
He admits he feels crushed by everything — family, the new baby, and his job — even though he has the house and the money.
He listens, but the scene keeps cutting back to Pat rehearsing compliments for his wife, showing that he is focused on winning Nikki back.
She is Veronica's sister, brought to the dinner and introduced to Pat at the end of the scene.
