Tiffany Teaches Pat to Dance, Explained

At Tiffany's garage studio, the deal turns literal: she makes Pat walk toward her as if she were Nikki, insisting that 'the only way to convey how much you've missed me is by your walk.' When he says he feels nothing, she answers with the story of how her husband died.

Tiffany Teaches Pat to Dance, explained

What happens

Tiffany takes Pat into the garage she has renovated into a dance studio. She asks him to walk toward her as if she were Nikki, and when he objects she reminds him of the deal: no walk, no letter. After he says he feels nothing, she tells him about Tommy's death, the lingerie he bought, and the accident on the road.

What's really going on

The scene is where the film's two damaged people finally do something real together. The dance lesson is a game with rules, and the rules do the work: walk slowly, do not talk, look up only halfway, and treat the partner as Nikki. Tiffany uses it to teach Pat how to show emotion, but she gets the lesson too, because when he says 'I don't feel anything,' she answers with the story of Tommy. Her monologue is the film's rawest piece of writing: the marriage, the months without desire, the pregnancy she did not want, and the lingerie he never got to give her. By the end, the walk and the confession have merged, and the line 'That's a feeling' is about both of them.

Key lines & what they mean

“The only way to convey how much you've missed me is by your walk.”
Tiffany's instruction: since he cannot speak, his body has to show the longing he claims to feel for Nikki.
“We were married for three years and five days, and I loved him.”
The opening of her confession about Tommy, exact about the time and clear about her love.
“I have a hard time taking care of myself.”
Her honest admission about why the marriage was difficult, said without excusing herself.
“Do you feel that? That's emotion.”
Her teaching point during the walk: she wants him to recognise feeling in his own body, not just describe it.
“And the Victoria's Secret box was still in the front seat.”
The detail that ends the story: the gift he never delivered was left in the car after he was killed.
