Chapter 25 of 30 · 3'04"
A stormy night brings Helga, the Dutch psychic, to the door to borrow candles. The young man who answers says he is Sidney's secretary, but Helga is more interested in his boots: "You wear boots?" Between weather predictions and small talk, she notices the wrong detail.
Helga Notices His Boots
On a stormy night, Helga ten Dorp arrives to borrow candles and finds Clifford, who introduces himself as Sidney's secretary. She tells him she is psychic and predicts the coming storm, then notices his boots. When Sidney returns, she greets him, glad he got home before the weather turned.
The scene is a genre exercise: the storm, the stranger at the door, the flickering dread. Helga is played for comedy — her broken English and her certainty that 'It will be big storm' — but she is also the one who sees what the audience should notice. She asks about Sidney's wife's death without being told the details, then fixes on Clifford's boots: 'You wear boots?' In a house where a killer left footprints and where the secretary keeps his work locked away, the question is not small talk. Her batty certainty is the film's way of pointing straight at the truth.
A1–C2 is the CEFR scale. Cards above the level you pick fade, and playback will not auto-pause on them.

“He said you were actually able to predict his wife 's death.”
Repeating a rumor to the person it concerns turns small talk into a quiet test.

She notices he is wearing boots indoors on a stormy night. It looks like an odd detail, and it hints at the footprints a killer would have left.
He says he is Sidney's secretary and that he arrived about three weeks ago, after Sidney's wife died. His role is clearly new and convenient.
She is the outside eye. She senses the death and fixates on Clifford's boots, planting the clue that will matter later.
