Buddy and Moira Steal Chocolate, Explained

Belfast · 2021

Chapter 8 of 14 · 2'21"

Moira runs the heist like a professional: Buddy keeps Mr Singh busy with a Lemon Mivvi while she makes "a sweep" of the chocolate bars. He botches it, grabbing Turkish Delight nobody wants. "I'm not sure you're cut out for this," she tells him, the sting of a friend deciding you're not good enough.

Buddy and Moira Steal Chocolate, explained

What happens

At Mr Singh's corner shop in Belfast, Moira and Buddy put 'Operation Steal the Chocolate' into action. Moira orders a Lemon Mivvi so the shopkeeper has to bend down for the boxes, while Buddy is supposed to swipe a handful of chocolate bars. Mr Singh spots them; Buddy escapes with only a box of Turkish Delight.

What's really going on

The comedy comes from how seriously the kids treat a petty theft. Moira talks like a heist-movie mastermind, "All you need is an in and out with a fast hand," and Buddy, desperate to impress her, goes along with a plan he clearly can't pull off. His failure lands as a joke about taste: the only thing he grabs is Turkish Delight, a sweet that, as the boys agree, "nobody likes." Under the slapstick is Buddy's need to belong. He's the small kid tagging along with a girl braver and quicker than he is, and her verdict, "I'm not sure you're cut out for this," is the kind of line a child remembers. The heist also ends on a turn: we learn Buddy's father has come home, out of nowhere, on a Wednesday.

Key lines & what they mean

“I'm not sure you're cut out for this.”
Moira's verdict: she doubts Buddy has the nerve or skill for the heist, a blunt way of saying he isn't the right type for the job.
“All you need is an in and out with a fast hand, and then the Milky Bars are on me.”
Her pep talk and her promise: one quick grab, and she'll treat him to Milky Bars afterward. Moira is clearly the one in charge.
“She says anything, she's done for!”
A boy's mock-tough warning: if the woman who saw them tells on them, she is finished. Bravery that is really childish panic.
“I thought you said we'd just do a couple, so he'd never even notice.”
Buddy, already scared, reminds Moira she promised a small theft the shopkeeper would never spot. He is the nervous one, not the mastermind.

Theme

Questions, then the lines
Why do the kids steal only a few chocolate bars?

Buddy insists on it. He's afraid a big sweep would leave an obvious gap on the shelf, and Mr Singh would know the bars had been nicked. He doesn't want to get caught.

Who tells on Moira and Buddy?

A woman on the street sees them run out and calls after them. The boys assume she'll report them to Mr Singh; one warns that if she says a word, she's done for.

Why does Buddy blame Moira when they're caught?

Panic. When a friend asks if he's proud of himself, Buddy answers flatly, "It was Moira," trying to push the blame onto her.

Why is Turkish Delight the punchline?

It's the one sweet everybody in the scene agrees is awful. Buddy risks everything and grabs the only thing nobody wants: "Who the hell eats Turkish Delight?"

Who is Moira in the scene?

The girl running the heist. She orders the Lemon Mivvi to distract Mr Singh, gives Buddy his instructions, and delivers the final verdict on whether he's cut out for it.
