夜里杰弗里送桑迪回家，桑迪把偷听来的零碎线索一点点倒给他——I don't know much but bits and pieces（零零碎碎的消息）。两人摸到女歌手的公寓楼下，她轻声说 It's really close by. That's what's so creepy（就在附近，这才叫人发毛）。想学怎么讲零散消息、又怎么形容一件小事让人心里发毛，这几句够用。

杰弗里回到小镇，夜里和桑迪边走边聊，聊各自的近况，也聊到那只耳朵。桑迪的房间就在她爸办公室楼上，所以她听到过一些消息：bits and pieces（零零碎碎的消息），总有个女歌手的名字 keep coming up（反复被提到），而且她被人 under surveillance（被警方监视）。桑迪压着声音说 It's really close by. That's what's so creepy（就在附近，这才叫人发毛），然后带杰弗里去看那栋公寓楼。想用英语说消息零零碎碎、说某人的名字老被提起、说某人被人盯着，这几句都能直接搬。

strange 重读，isn't it 降调收，像自言自语。

keep coming up。指某个名字、某件事老是被提起、总是冒出来。桑迪说线索里有个女歌手的名字 keeps coming up，就是这个用法。
under surveillance。under 是「处于……之下」，surveillance 是监视，合起来就是被人盯着、被警方盯梢；桑迪说那个女歌手被 under surveillance。
它多半是反讽，意思是「有什么稀奇的、还不就那样」。对方抱怨学校没劲，回一句 What else is new! 就是「这有什么好奇怪的」。
